Tuomariesittelyt

Helen Merry

”My name is Helen Merry, I am 62 years old. My Affix is Anacapa which I have held for just over seven years, it was passed on to me by my father before he passed away, prior to that I had my own affix but gave it up when I took my parents over. They had had had their Affix since the early 1960’s.

I work in an acute hospital setting where I manage a Decontamination Unit. I have been married for 40 years this year but separated for several years but we remain friends. I have 2 children aged 38 & 35, and 2 grandchildren both boys aged 12 & almost 3.

I was born on the Wirral in Cheshire UK and have stayed here most of my life, I spent a few years away working in Lincolnshire for a top Great Dane Kennel.

My parents first registered their Affix in the very early 60’s and kept it throughout their lives and now I have it, they were hobby dog show people and had ESS, Pointers and GSP. Amongst that we also had a vast array of other animals from pigs to rabbits and chinchillas to Birds of Prey.

When I was younger, I always wanted a Cocker Spaniel but just never seemed to happen. I owned my very own ESS a bitch in 2000 and then 18 months after I got an ESS dog. I showed them both successfully at open shows and reasonable success at Championship Shows, both of them gaining CC’s , RCC’s & BIS at open show level. I think my favourite was my older dog Anacapa Solo Flyer ShCM, he absolutely loved the show ring and at had 2CC’s, 1RCC he gained his Show Certificate of Merit and was awarded the Veteran of the Year award from the Southern ESS Society as well as a yearly awarded trophy for the most points awarded for wins at open shows, he also won over 20 BIS at this level.
Not having the time due to full time work and the capacity I only have 1 ESS & 1 JRT at this moment in time. My ESS (Gleadsbury It is Destiny For Anacapa ShCEX) has 2CC’s & 2 RCC and his ShCEX. I show my little JRT for fun at open shows but she has had a lovely start to her career.

I started judging properly in 1996 and was passed to award CC’s in ESS in 2017 and have awarded them 3 times. I have also judged in Sweden. To me movement is a key factor, if a dog doesn’t move correctly then it isn’t constructed correctly, I also love a good head with plenty of work and those soulful eyes.

For me the best dog is SH CH Mompesson Royal Destiny, although I think over the years there have been a few that have took my eye.

My other passion which I think I am pretty good at is fishing and I love to do this whenever I can as it takes my mind off the daily stresses of life. It is one of those hobbies that gets you out into nature, gives you times to reconnect and just listen to the world around you without the disturbance of daily noise. The dogs come with me and enjoy their time as they get to experience new smells and sounds too and they also get time to decompress.

Having never been to Finland before, I am looking forward to it immensely. I don’t have any expectations as such but am looking forward to it immensely, and I want to be totally surprised. I would love to be able to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis though and looking forward to doing some sightseeing.”

Christine House

”I was born and brought up in Cheshire where my parents ran a commercial dairy farm. Following my first degree in Geography I worked in agriculture for the UK Milk Marketing Board but after a couple of years I went back to University to study Landscape Architecture. I initially worked in Local Government before joining Wardell Armstrong, a multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy. I spent 26 years with the company the majority of which time I was a Director of the business.

I retired in 2018 and set up my own small environmental and planning consultancy with my husband. I stilll live in Cheshire on a small holding which provides the perfect environment to maintain my small kennel of English Springers.

I acquired my first dog, a Border Collie, in 1970 which was a gift from my uncle who had several working Collies. She was joined by a Pembroke Corgi when my grandfather came to live with us. She was a full pedigree carrying the Moorcliff prefix of June Froggat! In my early teens I set my heart on acquiring an English Springer Spaniel. My first English Springer arrived in 1977, a black and white bitch called Tiger Lily of Cleavehill. Once I passed my driving test, I was off to the shows!

Lily was not the most outgoing showdog and at one of the early shows I attended I met Mrs Kay Hannah who suggested that I should have litter. The first litter arrived in 1979, by Woodboy Dilly Jay from which I kept a liver and white bitch, Gleadsbury Rare Jewel. I had a further litter in 1981 this time using Ch Cliffhill Julius from which I kept a black and white bitch Gleadsbury Clarissa (Topic) from which all my current Springers can be traced.

I have had numerous litters over the years, but never have more than three litters per bitch. I normally only breed when I wish to keep something. Initially, my blood lines were Cleavehill/Tees view in origin but this changed in the late 1980’s when I used Sh Ch Raestor Countryboy of Mompesson who I liked because of her type and confirmation. I kept a dog from the litter, Gleadsbury Just Basil. His sister Gleadsbury Just So of Mompesson went on to be best brood bitch in the breed for two consecutive years. She is the grand dam of Sh Ch Mompessson Royal Destiny. Destiny was an exceptional sire, bringing type and consistency to many lines. I mated Gleadsbury Just Jasmin to Destiny which produced Sh Ch Gleadsbury Whatadestiny. She in turn produced some lovely pups with one of my all time favourites being Gleadsbury Whataliberty JW and 2 Res CC’s. Whilst she didn’t gain her title, her confirmation was perfection and her temperament a joy to live with.

I think my first judging appointment was in 1983, judging ESS at Lincoln CS. I have judged over a long period of time, eventually awarding CC’s for the first time in 2012. In addition to Springers I also award CC’s in Sussex Spaniels. All my judging appointments thus far have been in the UK. I enjoy judging all gundog breeds and in addition to English Springers I have also owned, bred and owned German Short Haired Pointers and Mini Smooth Dachshunds under the Gleadsbury prefix.

When judging English Springers, the most important factors are confirmation and balance – if it’s made right it will move right. The defining glory of any English Springer is its head. I like to see a well defined head with chiselling and a kind almond shaped eye.

I have had the pleasure of seeing some wonderful examples of the breed over the years so it is very difficult to choose one dog as the best. The following from the Mompesson Kennel are all dogs I particularly admired:

Sh Ch Trimere Time to Remember from Mompesson

Sh Ch Mompesson Royal Destiny

Sh Ch Mompesson Mixed Emotion

In terms of dogs which I have judged, it would be Sh Ch Melverly Sublimity. This bitch was so well balanced of excellent breed type and so sound on the move – a truly lovely Springer.

Having bred and shown Springers over 47 years, I have met many great characters in the breed, many of whom are sadly no longer with us. Kay Hannah, Jean Taylor and Dorothy and Tom Bury to name but a few. I don’t believe you ever stop learning and it is always good to hear well informed opinions. My dear old friend Mavis Lancaster deserves a special mention. I spent many happy hours talking to Mavis on all aspects of gundogs and she is sadly missed around the dog showing world.

I am very much looking forward to visiting Finland. Whilst I have seen a lot of Europe but have never visited any of the Scandinavian countries. Hopefully the weather will be kind so we can see it at its best.”

Frank Whyte

“My name is Frank Whyte of the Kazval affix. Over the years we have had UK Champions in six breeds across three groups. I have now retired from my profession as a Food Technologist. I come from a large family with five brothers and five sisters. I have one son and two granddaughters.

I grew up in the south of Scotland, in Annan, Dumfriesshire. In my youth I moved away for a few years to work in the south of England and to travel, but later returned to my home area. It is less populated, more suitable for keeping pets and dogs, and it also allowed me to further my education and profession.

Dogs have always been part of my life. I grew up around the family Greyhound and Whippets. After leaving home, my first dog of my own was a Labrador, followed by a red Cocker Spaniel.

My interest in pedigree dogs and breeding began when a local top breeder of Cocker Spaniels noticed my red Cocker Spaniel and asked if I had ever thought of showing her. After some discussion I decided to give it a try, entered my first local show, won a class and, as they say, joined the dog showing world. The rest is history.

My interest in the Welsh Springer Spaniel developed through meeting Moray Armstrong and John Thirlwell, who were both involved with the breed. I liked the look of the Welsh Springer, and John informed me of a litter due in Scotland sired by one of his males. From this litter our first Welsh Springer, Sh Ch Canisbay Captivation of Kazval, known as “Dylis”, was born.

We later bought Ferndel Freshman from John Thirlwell and mated her to our Champion Dylis. This combination produced the foundation of the Kazval Welsh Springer Spaniel line, resulting in three Champions and two top breed bitches. These bitches followed their dam Dylis, who herself was a top brood bitch.

Over the years I have bred around eight Welsh Springer Spaniel litters, producing champions in the UK, Holland, Norway, New Zealand and South Africa. In breeding, my focus has always been on breed type, health and temperament.

Among the Welsh Springers I have bred, the male I admire most is Nor Dan Ch Kazval Call Collect, for his breed type, balance and fabulous, friendly temperament. The female I admire most is Sh Ch Kazval Water Colour, for her femininity, type and overall quality.

I began judging in the mid-1980s in Scotland at local shows and have been fortunate to progress to judging in many European countries, as well as Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Pakistan. I have judged several breeds at Crufts and am contracted to judge the Gundog Group at Crufts 2027. I have also judged Group 8 at Stockholm International, the European Dog Show and the NKK.

When judging the Welsh Springer Spaniel, breed type and overall balance are extremely important. A dog should present a quality picture when standing, and coordinated, sound movement helps confirm that the dog is built correctly.

Best Welsh Springer I’ve seen Male Rwyns Lucky Luke and bitch Ferndel Vogue.

The people who have taught me the most about the breed are Moray Armstrong, John Thirlwell and Joan Dinwoodie.

I have visited beautiful Finland a few times and see it as the land of forests, water and hundreds of lakes. It is also the home of Nokia, a strong education system, Lordi and Lasse Viren. I am hoping to see some quality dogs, as I have done on previous visits.”
